Review
5.0 out of 5 stars -- Sensual, Sexy & Memorable -- Judith Rocchiccioli -- AVP
Bob Rector has created an incredible, sensual and memorable love story that is in short remarkable. The writing is vivid and the characters are memorable and flawed. Worthy of note is the authors knowledge of the female psyche which is quite remarkable. This is a great read I would recommend without reservation.
5.0 out of 5 stars -- A Great Cliffhanger -- S. R. Mallery -- AVP
I became totally immersed in this fast-paced, page-turning, Machiavellian story. Yet in the midst of all of this duplicity was something a little unexpected for me: a very touching portrayal of two people not just enjoying each other physically, but enjoying true love for the first time in their lives, a love where acceptance, protectiveness, in-sync bantering, and joy was very well portrayed. Highly recommended? You betcha!
5.0 out of 5 stars -- Raw & Natural, Florida at it's Best & Worst-- Patti Ann -- AVP
A fast-paced romantic thriller, filled with a lush setting, despicable villains, sex-crazed creeps, and love-seeking heroes. Kurt and Paula match each other in stature, desirability, and thirst for love. As in any good novel, there's a catch. She's married, and he's involved in the heist of emeralds. It's a pleasure to read a story written by a man who has the rare capability to understand the nuances of a woman's mind and the single-minded focus of a man's determination.
From the Author
The seeds for Unthinkable Consequences began in 1959, the year during which the story is set. My family lived in hot, sultry North Florida and I was at that tender age when I was beginning to see grown-ups in a different light. They were no longer just mommies and daddies, aunts and uncles, neighbors and teachers. There was something else, just below the skin, deep in their eyes. Not only was I changing, so were they, and it set my fertile imagination swirling.
The men had always been my heros. They had saved the world and had been building America in their own image ever since. Three bedroom bricks, big shiny cars, fast boats, sporty clothes, three kids, and a smart, pretty wife stashed away at home ready to throw the perfect garden party at a moment's notice and look stunning while doing so. These men were tough as nails and set high standards for us kids. Especially us boys. There was right and there was wrong; no middle ground. You did right. Period. No excuses. But now I was aware of a fatigue setting in. They had fought hard on the battle front and the home front. They had gotten most of what they wanted, but they were tired of the fight. It never seemed to end. With that came an edginess, and short fuses.
I began to see women differently too. They had run the country while the men were off at war and many had earned college degrees. But all that practical and academic experience was pointless. They would never be allowed to work because it would reflect badly on their husband's ability to support them. They could not even clean their own houses. To maintain the image of a certain affluence required having a conspicuous maid performing those tasks. Wives were allowed to join garden clubs and volunteer for charity drives and tend to the needs of the church and, of course, go shopping. Otherwise they were arm candy for their valiant, all-conquering husbands. They became pampered lionesses pacing restlessly in their gilded cages, smoking, drinking, stifling screams.
But when I became independently mobile and began exploring the world around me I discovered another breed of men and their loose, discardable women. They lived in the shadowy swamps and backwaters of the Florida peninsula, on the edges of the Everglades, or on tiny hidden islands in the Keys. These men played by nobody's rules but their own. They were not interested in marriage or building society. They too had fought for the cause, in Europe and in the Pacific. When peace came, they couldn't stop fighting. It was in their blood. They became mercenaries. Or worse. When they looked at you, you shrank back, your blood turned cold.
My imagination went into overdrive. What if Paula Taylor, a pampered housewife in a gilded cage, made a break for it and ran right into the arms of Kurt Younger, a soldier of fortune? But instead of draining Paula of all the pleasure she is capable of then tossing her aside, Kurt falls madly in love with her. Now he has a dilemma. At the center of it is a sackful of stollen emeralds and Paula. One is worth two million dollars. The other is priceless, the woman who has captured his heart, something he thought impossible. Enthralled with Kurt, Paula must decide: Forsake all that she has known to run away with Kurt to his hideaway island in the Florida Keys or never see him again. Kurt is determined to have both the emeralds and Paula. Only he knows lives are at stake. His, and if he isn't careful--Paula's.
That was the premise for my story and it percolated in the back recesses of my mind for many years - along with countless other story ideas. As a young man I stumbled into the entertainment business, primarily in films and TV (no, not Hollywood - the other 95% of the business). I first tried developing Unthinkable Consequences as a script since that was the medium I was accustomed to. At some point (I can't remember exactly when) I decided the story would work better as a novel than a script. I had always wanted to write a novel and decided Unthinkable Consequences was the perfect project.
I worked on the manuscript in fits and starts, cranking out mounds of pages, but it was constantly being shoved onto the back burner because we were busy raising a family and building our business. Sometimes it would sit there for years before I found time to attack it again. After the kids were grown and gone and our business finally slowed down to something manageable, I pulled the manuscript out again and worked on it nonstop until in was finally finished. So you see, Unthinkable Consequences is not just a book, it's a life-long quest finally achieved.
